Have you ever wondered why by some contemporary paintings, that look like they were produced by toddlers, sell for enormous sums? Ever wondered why so many art installations appear ridiculous? This book addresses these issues, along with many others. Dyer does so by examining a fundamental distinction between image (what the eye perceives) and artifact (the physical canvas and brushstrokes used to create that image). He argues that this distinction influences how (and why) works of Art are treated (in the contemporary market) so differently from those of Music. Throughout this book Dyer generates insights in contemporary Art by comparing and contrasting it with contemporary Music. Dyer approaches art images in a novel way, by viewing all images as pre-existing within an abstract image space. He explores the size and structure of this space and makes a number of observations about how to judge Art (and why such judgments are difficult). Most descriptions of Art by art connoisseurs are subjective. In contrast, Dyer concentrates on how Art can be described objectively. He defines objective descriptions as those that are able to accurately reconstruct the images they describe. He discusses the nature of description languages, along with the interpreters needed to decode descriptions made in those languages. This approach enables Dyer to define the complexity of an image in an objective manner, consisting of the minimal description length of an image, combined with its associated computations and description language interpreter. Dyer covers a variety of approaches concerning Art appreciation and aesthetics, from psycho-social and historical to neural. He examines the role of genre in Art, along with the different dimensions of judgment that arise within image vs. artifact domains. Finally, he considers the future of digital Art, through the application of technologies of artificial intelligence (AI), artificial neural networks (ANNs), algorithmic art (AA) and artificial evolution (AE).

As is very often always the case, I received this book free in exchange for a review. Despite the kindness of receiving a free book I'm absolutely candid about the book because I want everyone to know what they're getting as much as I hope to when I'm shopping.

My usual review format is summary/positives/negatives in three easy sections but in this case I dispense with that. The important thing is not for my to qualitatively analyze this title so much as to make sure that readers of this review have a good sense for what exactly they're getting into because this is rather unique in the realm of art books.

Essentially, this is a detailed attempt to bring quantitative techniques to bear on the judgement and assessment of works of visual art. The author does a wonderful job of marrying these two ideas together in a coherent and approachable way but as a potential reader the question you want to ask yourself the most is, "Do I want to wrap my head around equations and computer programming code that comprise a theory of art evaluation?" If the answer to that is in any way a "no" then you don't want to take a shot at this book. If your mind is open to the idea, then this is the book to start with in that particular field of study. Dyer's approach is readable and assumes no previous knowledge but if you still have nightmares about Algebra class then this book isn't going to do much but bring those memories firmly back to life again.

It should be noted that in addition to a mathematical look at art, the author also delves into heady questions. For example, why art sells for what it does and the psychological factors that make a piece sell or sit on the shelf. How many different pieces of art are possible (warning: Lots of exponents in this section). What is the future of the visual arts and how do visual arts differ from musical art forms? Dyer addresses a lot of questions that the more analytical among us have pondered for years.

In summary, this book sat looking at me from the coffee table for a couple weeks before I picked it up because I simply didn't understand what on EARTH this book could be about. As it turns out, it's a heady but interesting topic but you've got to you the right mindset going in or you'll end up using the book as a coaster or as part of some Papier-mâché project.

Received this very insightful book about Contemporary Art just as the Holidays was just beginning. So it took me awhile to finish reading it. Once I had time to sit down and read this book I was very impressed with his writings. I also never understood why something that looked like a 5 year old had painted would sale for so much money. What an eye opener I had once it was explained to me. I now have respect for these artist and take time to enjoy them when I happen to see them in homes.
Michael Dyer is a professor of computer science at UCLA, specializing in AI (Artificial Intelligence), ANN (Artificial Neural Networks), and AE (Artificial Evolution). He received his Ph.D. in computer science (CS) from Yale University (New Haven, CT) in 1982. He also has an M.A. in Anthropology from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA), an M.S. in CS from the University of Kansas and a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH). He also is a glassblower, a songwriter and a music lover. Blend these elements and his approach to this unique topic gains credibility.

Michael deals with art appreciation and music appreciation, but in terms that may be foreign to many readers. He carefully explores the difference between image and artifact - image being the `picture' placed before our eyes - and this could be an original painting or drawing, a poster, a photograph, or a print (even the sophisticated Giclée process) - versus the original artist's version of that `picture'. Ashe opens his book he states, `for most of my life I have felt confused about contemporary art. I could not make sense of the sometimes bizarre behavior of contemporary artists, nor of many of the pieces they produced. I was shocked by the enormous sums of money paid for works of art that I felt any `man-on-the-street' could have produced. Then, one day I had an epiphany and suddenly it all made sense. Over the years I have had some additional insights about the nature of contemporary art and I began to think that some of these realizations/observations might be of interest to others (who may also be trying to understand contemporary art).' And so his exploration into art - image versus artifact begins, and is so cleverly stated that many people who have not the slightest appreciation for a Pollock or a Klee much less a recently completed splash of energy by a living artist will gain an understanding of the mystery he explores.

At book's end he summarizes, `The art lover appreciates (and gains aesthetic pleasure from) high quality images produced by artists. The level of appreciation is increased when the art lover learns more about how the artist created the image, what labor was required, and also what goals the artists was trying to achieve in creating the work. This knowledge alters the judgments that the art lover makes when deciding how the work compares with other works within that genre. The art lover also assesses the aesthetic quality of the work within its historic context and weighs its value in terms of how innovative the image is/was, with respect to other images within that same historical context.' Etc

Michael opens window and doors and if at time the correlation between music seems a bit pushed and peripheral, there is so much more in the book to retain our attention and our expanding understanding of contemporary art. Grady Harp, November 14
